TRACE & NARRATIVE
For centuries, black spinel was mistaken for other dark stones. Gems set into royal crowns as ""black diamond"" were later identified as spinel.
Mohs hardness of 8. Short of diamond at 10, but second only to sapphire at 9. Formed from magnesium and aluminium oxides, its crystal structure accounts for that toughness.
Mined in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Tanzania, frequently found alongside other gemstones—which is exactly why it was always taken for something else. Recognition under its own name came only recently.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
- Hardness 8 — highly durable.
- No special precautions required.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROJECTION
Self-Reliance — Stamina — Restoration
No spectacle. Quietly replenishes what long periods of output deplete. Before you lean on anyone else, this one puts the ground back under your own feet. Workmanlike in the best sense.
SELECTOR'S NOTE
He buys tools, not labels. Picks it up, registers the weight and finish, doesn't ask the name. If the density at his wrist changes for the better, that's the entire transaction. I recommend this stone specifically for that type of purchase — quick, physical, uninterested in narrative. Quality confirmed by hand, not by explanation.
