The cause of the pink was debated for years. Research in the 2000s identified trace inclusions of an aluminium phosphate mineral (dumortierite-related) as the primary source. Decades of discussion, to determine the origin of one colour.

Ancient Rome used it as a seal for wax. A rose quartz face mask was found in an Egyptian pharaoh's tomb. A stone with a long history of being chosen for direct contact with skin.

Found in Madagascar, Brazil, and South Africa. Transparent crystals are rare; most occurs as translucent mass.
