TRACE & NARRATIVE

Harvested from the black-lipped oyster of the warm South Pacific. The organic layers secreted by the shell to defend against intrusion accumulate to form nacre—mother of pearl.

Its structure is a microscopic brickwork of ultra-thin calcium carbonate platelets. This layering causes light interference, shifting colour with the angle of view. The colour is not applied. It is produced by the architecture itself.

Made of the same material as pearl, yet this was once a shell—a dwelling. Long before it became ornament, it was part of a living body. A layer built for protection, producing the quietest light.
